Egames 2009
So the time had come again for eGames Expo, after a long night of gaming and going to bed at 6am we somehow managed to stumble out of bed 2 hours later to catch the train to the city. After 45 mins of sleeping on the train and almost missing Parliament Station, we finally arrived. The weather was absolutely stunning, the ladies in the city wearing almost nothing was even more stunning and woke me up pretty fast.
First we took a look around the gardens of the Royal Exhibition Center then heading in to take a look around before the crowds arrived. Everyone was still setting up and we got a chance to try out a few games. We went for a quick smoke outside only to see a massive queue outside the front door’s. After taking a few snap shots with some people dressed in layers of costume in 40 degree heat we head back in. Soon after we head back in the doors opened up to the public.
The first few hours we took a look around every booth to see what this year had in store for us and I’ll be honest, I shouldn’t have got up so early, eGames 2009 was not worth losing sleep over. Apart from Ubisoft there was no proper booths, every single PC was either playing Counter Strike 1.6 or Source, Maybe they should rename the expo to ‘CS Expo’. Yes we all love CS however they went a little overboard with it.
The technology section was almost empty, there was meant to be a guest speaker come in and speak about something, the reason I say something is because no guest speaker actually spoke and explained what that ’something’ was, they announced him for about half an hour, Warboy and myself were actually curious as to what this guy was going to speak about so we sat down only to realize after the half hour that we were the only ones sitting in the seats waiting for this guy. The place was pretty empty, it being on the same day as the spring races might have something to do with it but all in all I was not happy with the turn out.
Another major part I disliked about eGames 2009 was that they focused a little too much on selling games and gaming accessories as apposed to focusing on showing off games and having more tournaments. Australian gaming expos just don’t compare to the ones overseas.
Well listen to me rambling on all negatively it wasn’t as bad as I make it seem, there were some parts of it that I liked. There were a few new games made by Australian game studio’s/university student’s that were very interesting, note how I said interesting not good. It’s actually a real shame that Australian has yet to produce a half decent game. All in all it was not a total waste of time, maybe next year I wont wake up so early for it.
